The Maldives quite rightly has a reputation as one of the premier diving spots in the world. Whether you choose to don a tank and dive beneath the waves or simply snorkel, you are guaranteed to see aquatic wonders of all shapes, sizes and colours. Dipak, one of our Worldwide Travel Consultants, was recently lucky enough to snorkel in this amazing destination and managed to snap some amazing photos that will whet your appetite for underwater adventure.
The waters surrounding the Maldives are home to some 187 species of coral. Here you can see how these magnificent underwater marvels form on the seabed to create a sunken landscape bursting with life and wonder.
Charles Darwin correctly predicted that coral reefs are formed around extinct volcanoes. These volcanoes are eventually claimed by the sea where they form atolls, of which the Maldives has many.
Lying just below the surface, much of the Maldives’ spectacular coral is easily observed by snorkellers.
Many of the fish living amongst the coral exhibit incredible displays of colour. One of the most beautiful examples are Bartlett’s Anthia, which are vibrant pink with dashes of orange.
The Maldive anemonefish belongs to the Pomacentridae family. In non-scientific parlance this means it’s related to the Clownfish or, as it’s more commonly known, “Nemo out of Finding Nemo”.
