Diving

Malaysia offers a huge variety of great locations where divers of all abilities can experience mind blowing underwater adventures. Sabah, found in Northern Borneo, boasts a beautiful landscape including two fascinating national parks, however it is offshore where you’ll find what makes this place truly special. The waters around Sabah are a diver’s paradise. Here you will find a multitude of sites which feature some of the best coral in the world as well as all sorts of incredible creatures including hammerhead sharks. Gaya Island is home to its own PADI diving school that will take you beneath the surface to discover the giant clams, scorpion fish and blue-spotted rays that call these whimsical waters home. Sabah is quite simply the ultimate diving destination.

• Nuno Gomes achieved the deepest dive ever when he went down to 318 metres, that’s 1,043 ft!

• A manned craft has twice reached the deepest part of the ocean, a mind blowing 10,916 metres.

• Coral reefs, of which Malaysia has many, are home to 25% of all known marine species on Earth.

Explore East Malaysia – GET OFF THE BEATEN TRACK ON MALAYSIA’S EAST COAST

Head to Malaysia’s east coast – between the peninsula’s northeast tip and Kuantan in the south – for immaculate beaches and underwater worlds of sensational scuba diving. Largely unsung until recent years, islands like Tioman and Redang are today acknowledged as genuine holiday havens, and their resurgence makes now the perfect time to visit. Jungle-covered mountains form a natural partition from the more populated west coast allowing the region’s old Malay culture to flourish, while its resorts adopt a less-commercialised outlook.

Redang’s surrounding dive sites create a rewarding visual experience. Look out for clownfish, barracudas, blacktip sharks and turtles. A PADI dive school and non-motorized watersports at The Taaras Beach Resort enable guests to dive into these aquatic wonders. Tanjong Jara Resort also offers excellent diving, with stunning reefs off Tenggol Island. Back on terra firma, jungle trekkers can explore the lush local landscape, while sunkissed beaches and sensual spas provide prime relaxation. Tioman Island – of Hollywood classic ‘South Pacific’ fame – is another example of enticing east coast getaways. Its JapaMala Resort is a lesson in letting go and escaping in barefoot luxury.

Tanjong Jara Resort – EAST COAST
Steeped in age-old traditions, this beachfront retreat has been inspired by the majestic splendour of 17th century Malay palaces. Simply relax at the awardwinning Spa Village with its traditional treatments passed down over generations or discover the rich culture of the Malay heartland with tours, cooking classes and guided excursions that offer a unique insight into the local way of life.

More of Malaysia – HEAD INLAND FOR WONDERFUL WILDLIFE OR STAY COASTAL FOR URBAN HISTORY

Malaysia’s vastly diverse geography strikes a chord with our adventurous spirit. While there’s no doubting the appeal of its beach resorts, Malaysia’s mountainous interior and urban centres hold real travel treasures too. At 130 million years old, the Taman Negara national park rainforest is the planet’s oldest and supports many rare species including the Malayan tiger and Asian elephant within its 4,000 square kilometre habitat. Climbing to almost 2,000 metres, Cameron Highland’s lofty kingdom of mountains, jungle trails, tea plantations and waterfalls leaves visitors with a profound sense of freedom and space. Malacca, meanwhile, is a historic port city in the southwest that became a World Heritage site in 2008. See how centuries-old Malay traditions and colonial heritage are preserved alongside vibrant modernity.
