Famed for its futuristic cities defined by glimmering skyscrapers and an entrancing atmosphere of opulence that have made this small region of Arabia synonymous with luxury, the United Arab Emirates has found itself firmly atop many bucket lists. Yet, beyond its dazzling draws, the region shelters an array of lesser-known treasures, from elusive wildlife and pristine nature to golden shores that truly feel a world away from its most famous metropolises. One of our marketing team members, Tanay, recently undertook a journey through these hidden gems, exploring the emirates of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. Follow in his footsteps and discover another facet of the never-ending allure of the UAE.
Hi Tanay! Thanks for taking us through your recent trip to the UAE. Which destinations did you visit throughout your trip?
During my time in the UAE, I visited the emirates of Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, located on the north-eastern shores of the country. I had always associated the United Arab Emirates with these sprawling, bustling cities, so to get to experience this other side of it was incredible. Both emirates have mountain ranges, so instead of skyscrapers, I was surrounded by soaring peaks!
That sounds amazing. Can you share some highlights or must-do experiences from each location?
There are so many that it’s difficult to choose, but snorkelling around Snoopy Island, an island off the coast of Fujairah, was undoubtedly a highlight! The waters around the island were teeming with marine life – I even saw a blacktip reef shark! Another wildlife highlight was a desert safari organised by The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert where we managed to glimpse a few Arabian oryxes. Lastly, a truly must-do experience would be paragliding into Six Senses Zighy Bay. Technically, it’s not part of the UAE as it’s located within an Omani enclave, but arriving at the resort was a once-in-a-lifetime experience in and of itself.
How did the destinations complement one another?
It was the perfect combination to experience the UAE’s natural diversity while enjoying a balance of adventure and relaxation. I got to indulge in the classic beach getaway experience without missing out on adding an element of activity and exploration to my holiday.
What was your top dining experience at each property?
The dining at every hotel was absolutely outstanding. Due to the emirates’ coastal location, fresh seafood was in abundance. My favourite dish at the Address Beach Resort Fujairah was definitely oysters while the black cod at DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Marjan Island was out of this world! We really got the VIP experience at Six Senses Zighy Bay with a private lunch. Another incredible experience was dining at the highest restaurant in the UAE at 1484 by Puro in Jebel Jais.
For travellers considering a similar multi-centre holiday, what tips or advice would you offer based on your experience?
I would say go for it. There’s so much more to the UAE than people realise and opting for a multi-centre really does show you an entirely different side of the country. I recommend doing as many activities as possible that you wouldn’t get the chance to experience in Dubai.
