5 Great Reasons to Visit the Aegean Coast

  • History – The Aegean Coast features the ruins of two of the 'Wonders of The Ancient World': The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Bodrum.
  • Beaches – Endless stretches of sun-kissed golden sands make it the perfect place to enjoy the warm turquoise Aegean waters.
  • Cuisine – The region is renowned for its food and especially for the high-quality olive oil (a key ingredient in many Turkish dishes), the fantastically fresh fruit and vegetables, and fresh fish.
  • Markets – Take a stroll through the vibrant market streets of Çeşme, Izmir, Fethiye's old town, Bodrum and Marmaris, inhaling the sweet aromas of spices, fresh foods, and traditional goodies such as Turkish delights. Browse the unique handmade jewellery, clothes, pottery, textiles, carpets, and more wonderful gems. There is no better way to experience the culture than to walk among locals in a bustling, authentic Turkish market.
  • Watersports – There is a huge range of watersports and diving opportunities on offer.

Things to do whilst on holiday in the Aegean Coast

Get a glimpse into fascinating ancient Greek and Roman civilizations at Ephesus, Europe's most complete classical metropolis. When the Romans took over this previously Greek city it became the second biggest and most significant city of Rome. Nowadays on display at this ancient site are the remains of grand Ionian columns, an odeon, aqueducts, baths, and temples alongside other incredible monuments. The Celsus Library is especially magnificent.

The stylish coastal town of Bodrum is one of the most popular destinations in the Aegean area. Its majestic 15th-century Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights of Rhodes, is an incredibly beautiful sight to behold and boasts wonderful views of the harbour over which it towers. Bodrum also showcases the superb ruins of an amphitheater which at the peak of its existence could hold up to 13,000 spectators, and of course the breathtaking ruins of the Halicarnassus Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Yalikavak presents stunning 18th-century stone windmills which lie derelict in a picturesque area of Bodrum surrounded by hills and olive groves and enjoying unobstructed panoramic views.

For a taste of the high life, dine beside the glamorous Bodrum marina, getting an authentic taste of Turkish mezze and fresh seafood with a view of the yachts peacefully drifting by.
